Show Synopsis

Set in the dramatic backdrop of Japan’s Meiji period, A Portrait of Shunkin weaves a poignant tale of love, sacrifice, and transformation. The story follows Shunkin, a gifted blind musician from Osaka, who, despite losing her sight at a young age, becomes an accomplished artist revered for her exceptional skill. Shunkin's personality, shaped by her blindness, is proud and stubborn, and she often tests the loyalty of those around her.

At her side is Sasuke, her devoted servant, who endures the emotional and physical toll of serving her while loving her silently and unconditionally. Over the years, Sasuke’s love and commitment to Shunkin never waver, even as he faces the constant challenge of balancing his role as a servant with the depth of his feelings.

The plot thickens when Ritaro, Shunkin's suitor, becomes consumed by jealousy after being harshly rejected. His actions lead to a tragic event that disfigures Shunkin’s face, casting her into despair. It is in this moment of darkness and devastation that Sasuke makes the ultimate sacrifice—he blinds himself with a hairpin, choosing to live in Shunkin's world of darkness so he can be closer to her.

As their relationship evolves, from master-servant to teacher-student, and finally to lovers, it becomes clear that their connection transcends the boundaries of sight and physicality. The story explores the depths of human emotion, questioning what true love is and whether it’s defined by what we see or by what we feel and experience together.

This emotionally charged performance is a groundbreaking fusion of Shanghai Yue Opera and traditional Japanese music and dance. The opera's unique singing style and graceful movements intertwine with the elegance of Japanese classical music, bringing a new dimension to this cross-cultural masterpiece. With themes of devotion, loyalty, and personal sacrifice, A Portrait of Shunkin invites audiences to reflect on the power of love and human connection beyond the surface.
